What does Duct Tape have to do with Church?
The Promise Players will present the comedy, “Don’t Kick the Turkeys” by Andy and Jennifer Hansen. It is a feel-good, 1 ½ hour, family comedy about a church that, at this point in its history, is in its 20th year of hiring its 20th pastor.
It is only Rev. Thompson's third day as pastor of New Hope Church. The pastor wants to try new things and make some changes within the traditions of the church. His secretary lays down the laws of the office, the janitor is "fixing" everything in sight, the most prestigious member of the congregation is on the war path and an eccentric lay-person presents some far out ideas for Sunday morning's special. When the cast of strange and eccentric congregation members gets the false word that the pastor is dying, they allow him to change some of what the stale church calls tradition but is more about being stubborn and unforgiving. The calamity and humor only escalate when a daycare moves into the church building after the pipes in their own building burst. As everyone finds out the pastor won’t be ‘departing’ from them soon, it is too late to turn back. Can God work in such a situation? Along side the laughs are striking similarities to almost every church.
This play will benefit the Clinic for Special Children, located in the Strasburg area. Their mission is to serve children and adults who suffer from genetic and other complex medical disorders by providing comprehensive medical, laboratory, and consultative services, and by increasing and disseminating knowledge of science and medicine.
The play will be performed at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on November 1-2, and 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. and matinees will be performed on Saturdays and Sundays November 2nd, 3rd, 9th, and 10th, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
